Faith and mental health

Everyday, people are getting more conscious about mental health and depression topics. We can easily find social media influencers talking about their depression phase and encouraging people to go see a therapist but there is always religion figures and motivational speakers who deny depression, mental illness and suicidal thoughts claiming that it’s just sadness because we are far away from God or because we didn’t achieve much in life.

Do depression is caused because the person is not religious enough?

Dr Amr AbdelKafi claimed that if a person is feeling sad or depressed is because he is not religious enough and when a person is really believing in God and destiny, he will always be
able to find happiness and gratitude. For Dr Amr, depression can be cured by just praying and looking at all the surroundings around us.

Meanwhile, Dar Al Iftaa, stated that Depression and other mental health issues are serious
problems and that they don’t rely on any religious backgrounds. That makes us think again about what we were told from religious TV presenters concerning this sensitive topic. A spiritual and religious mindset might help someone to deal with depression and to be motivated to escape this hard phase but at the end of the day Depression is like diabetes, always needs a cure.
